Salat ul Tasbih

REMINDER : Please remember to donate towards Jamia Masjid Swafia in the last few days of Ramadan when the rewards are greatly multipled.  Please remember the masjid and all those in our local community who normally attend and are connected with the masjid in your Duas at this difficult time.

This page provides details about how you should offer the Salat ul Tasbih namaaz (Salat or prayers).

Background to Salat ul Tasbih

The hadiths tell us that our beloved Prophet Muhammed (Peace Be Upon Him) told his uncle if you  offer this Nafli namaaz “Allah (swt) will forgive your sins: of the future and of the past; new and old; those you have forgotten and those you did knowingly; big and small; hidden and revealed.”  He (pbuh) said you should offer this Namaaz every day if possible, if not, every Friday, if not, once a month, if not, once a year, if not, at least once in a life time.

When Can You Offer Salat ul Tasbih

Salat ul Tasbih can be offered any of the allowed times, when other Namaazes can be offered.  It is offered in four rakats with the appropriate niyat, the intention.  It can be offered individually or with others in a jamaat lead by the Imam.

One of the best times to offer it is on the night of 15th of Shaban, Shabe Barat.  On this special night we believe the doors of mercy and forgiveness are thrown open by Allah (swt), we can be forgiven if we sincerely repent for our sins. So why not make that special Dua after offering this special Nafli Namaz.

Usually on this night the Imam Sahib will lead the jamaat for Salat ul Tasbih at Jamia Masjid Swafia.  If you can not attend the jamaat, instructions are provided below so you can still offer Salat ul Tasbih by yourself.

The Tasbih That Should Be Read

The Tasbih that needs to be recited a total of 300 times during the four rakats is the first half of the Third Kalima Tamjeed.

“Subhaan Allahi Wal Hamdulillahi Wa Laa ilaha illal Laahu Wallahu Akbar”

Tasbih in Arabic

Translated as

“Glory be to Allah. All Praise is due to Allah.  There is no God except Allah.  Allah is the greatest.”

The Tasbih needs to be read by everybody, even when in jamaat.  The Imam Sahib will usually read it in a louder voice the first time at each point to remind everyone. Those behind the Imam Sahib should then read it quietly the required 15 or 10 times.

When To Read The Tasbih

  1. In the first rakat after reading Sana (“Subhana Kallahumma ..”) recite the above Tasbih 15 times.
  2. Then recite “Aouzobilla ..”, “Bismillah ..”, Surah Fatiha and any other Surah.  Then you must recite the Tasbih 10 times.
  3. You go to the Ruku saying Takbir (“Allah Hu Akbar”), after reciting “Subhaana Rabbiyal Azeem” a minumum of 3 times you again recite the Tasbih 10 times while remaining in the Ruku position.
  4. You rise from the Ruku saying “Samee Allahu Liman Hamidah Rabbana Lakal Hamdh” and recite the Tasbih 10 times while standing.
  5. After saying Takbir and doing the first Sajdah, you remain in the Sajdah position after reciting “Subhaana Rabbiyal A’la” a minimum of 3 times to recite the Tasbih for another 10 times.
  6. After saying Takbir and going to the sitting position you recite the Tasbih 10 times.
  7. After saying the Takbir and doing the second sajdah you remain in the sajdah position to the recite the last 10 times for the first rakat.  You will have now recited the Tasbih a total of 75 times in the first rakat.
  8. You say the Takbir and stand up for the second rakat to recite the Tasbih 15 times before reciting Surah Fatiha.
  9. You continue with the rest of the rakat reciting the extra Tasbih in the same places as the first rakat.
  10. At the end of the second sajdah of the second rakat, you remain seated to recite “Attahiyto”, Durood and Dua.
  11. You get up for the third rakat without saying Salaam and continue as you did for the first rakat starting with Sana.
  12. You complete the fourth rakat as you did the second.  You compete the namaaz by reciting “Attahiyto”, Durood, Dua and Salaam.
  13. Over the four rakaats you will have recited the Tasbih a minimum of the required 300 times.

Don’t count loudly, or on fingers, or on Tasbih beads as that will invalidate your Namaaz.  You can count by pressing your fingers gently.

If you missed reciting the Tasbih in one of the positions but then you remember you can recite extra in the same position in the next rakat to ensure you have recited it a total of 300 times.

If you missed a Wajib part of the Namaaz you can do Sajdah Sahaw without having to recite the Tasbih if you already recited the correct amount.  If you missed reciting the Tasbih in any of the positions, but you remember later then you can recite them in Sajdah Sahaw.
