Swafia Mosque is inviting everyone to our open day. You may be religious or follow no religion. If you have never seen inside a mosque now is your chance. All are welcome to come and look around the mosque and ask questions about Islam. You can go on a short tour to see some of the features of the mosque. It will be a general Fun Day of other activities and stalls to raise funds for a very worthy cause.
Maybe you are curious about what goes on inside a mosque. How do Muslims pray ? Why does the mosque have a dome or minarets ? What do Muslim kids learn in the madrassa ? Why do Muslims fast ? What do Muslims say about Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) ? Now is your chance to get your questions answered directly by local Muslims in Wakefield.
It will also be a general Fun Day with a bouncy castle for children, henna tattoos, face painting, and food stalls. Other organisations will have information stands. We’re hoping it will be a sunny day so you will be able to make use of the ice cream van.
This year we will be raising funds for a new initiative, Iqra Senior Sisters. As people become older especially as pensioners they may find it more difficult to get out of the home to meet people. Iqra Senior Sisters is especially aimed at senior ladies and will provide activities and support for regular gatherings to meet and socialise so they feel less lonely stuck at home. Some of the proceeds from stalls as well as general donations, and proceeds from the Tombola will go towards this worthy cause, so please be generous.
The funds raised at our last Open Day in 2018 were added to sums collected at Friday prayers at Swafia and other Wakefield mosques to get a grand total of £1885 which were donated to a very important cause at Wakefield Hospice.
We will be providing free tea and coffee and you will be able to sample some food.
You can see some photos from last years Open Day below.
Some details on our posters below.

JOIN BY JUNE 30, 2019 to take advantage of discounted membership for those joining at the start.
Swafia Funeral Committee is being set up so that we, as a community, can help each other at one of the most difficult times we face, when a loved one passes away.
When a loved one passes away it can be a very difficult time for their family. There is the obvious emotional shock of losing a loved one, made worse if it is sudden. There may be the stress of getting a body released, arranging a funeral, and may be travel overseas, all in a very short time. More practically even at this time there is the added worry about money as funerals can cost thousands of pounds.
Whilst somebody’s passing away from this world will always be a difficult time, one way in which we can ease the burden for our family is by preparing for that time financially.
Swafia Funeral Committee is being established so that we as a community, in Wakefield can help each other at such a time. Those who join as members will contribute to a fund by paying an “Initial Joining Fee” then every year through an “Annual Membership Fee”. The fund will then be used to provide financial assistance with the basic funeral costs to the family of a member, when he or she passes away.
Everybody joining should have the intention of helping such a family in distress. The intention is that when our time comes, as it must, the community will help our family in their time of need.
Though in some ways Swafia Funeral Committee is similar to other “Death Committees” you may have heard about there are some differences so please carefully read the Terms and Conditions for the full details. Often other “Death Committees” limit their membership based around extended families or for people from a certain area. Swafia Funeral Committee is open to all and anyone can become a member.
You can collect a Membership form and the Terms and Conditions from Swafia Mosque.
If you join by 30 June, 2019 you will pay only the initial joining fee of £150 at the start. Anybody joining after this date will have to pay the Initial Joining Fee of £150 AND the Annual Membership Fee of £50.
So please return your completed form and payment details as soon as possible. We would recommend you complete a Standing Order Mandate to enable easy payment of Annual Membership in the future.
Please note though Swafia Funeral Committee is being set up under the masjid’s banner and will be managed by the volunteers that help to look after the masjid, there is no direct financial benefit to the masjid. Funds for Swafia Funeral Committee will be held in a separate account and will only be made up by contributions from it’s members.
The monthly Ghiyarvi Sharif programme will be held with the completion of the recitation of the Quran-e-Pak during Travhee namaaz on Saturday 1 June 2019. This will be the 27th night of Ramadan often believed to be Laylat al-Qadar – The Night of Power or Destiny. The programme will start after Isha/Travhee namaaz starting at 11:00 pm.
There will be a short but enlightening talk. You are invited to attend along with your older sons and friends to this special night, which will end with the communal Dua and distribution of Tabarak.
The masjid will stay open for those wishing to offer further ibadaat.
Parking for Jumma and Eid ul Fitir
As you will be aware we have a greater attendance for the last Friday prayers in Ramadan – Jumma-tul-Widha – and for Eid ul Fitir prayers. To keep disruption and parking problems to a minimum we would request that all locals walk to the mosque on these days, others coming from further away should car share so we can make the best use of our limited parking facilities without disturbing our neighbours. Please note adjoining streets have double yellow and other parking restrictions so check signs to ensure that you park safely.
News about Eid ul Fitir
The first day for Eid ul Fitir is likely to be Wednesday 5thJune. If Ramadan completes 30 days it will be on Thursday 6th June. To confirm the actual day please listen to your Swafia Azaan Radio at about Maghrib time on Tuesday 4th June.
We will also try to post an announcement on this web site at www.swafia.org.uk, or our Twitter feed at https://twitter.com/Swafia_Mosque, or send a notification on the MyMosque app. Please check after Maghrib on Tuesday.

Two Isha / Travhee Jamaats at Jamia Masjid Swafia
As in previous years we will offer two jamaats for the convenience of everybody in Wakefield.

Wakefield Ramadan Timetable
You can collect a printed copy of the timetable from the masjid that details all the times for namaz including jamaat at the mosque, and fasting times for Wakefield.
We have a larger A3 poster you can put on the wall and a smaller A6 card one for your pocket.
Download and print your own copy or save to your desktop or wallpaper on your mobile from previous links.
Gain The Benefits of Ramdaan
We should work hard to gain the great benefits of Ramdan where Nafli prayers have the value of Fard prayers in normal times and Fard prayers have 70 times the value from other times. We should ask for forgiveness for ourselves and everybody else. We should do dhikr and give charity, read and try to understand the Quran-e-Pak to gain the benefits of this blessed month.
We should make a special effort to offer all our namaz with the jamaat at the mosque.
